Kerala, a South Indian state is a thriving center of tourism in India. Wayanad district, one of the fourteen districts and a hill station is located in Kerala, South India. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Wayanad is popular for its wildlife sanctuary named as Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary which is contiguous to the Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamilnadu and it forms a fulcrum of the Nilgiri system of Biodiversity in Kerala. The Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary is home to animals of the order of bison, deer, wild dogs, civet cat, panthers, tigers and elephants which can be a delight of sorts for the tourists who have a yen for adventure tourism.
Edakkal Caves
The Edakkal caves located in the Wayanad district, which is located 10 kilometers away from Sultan Bathery and are situated on the top of Ambukuthi hills in the Wayanad district, situated in Kerala, South India. Edakkal caves are at a top of the 3000 feet above sea level in Ambukuthi hills and to the top of hills the range is 5400 feet. The trip to Ambukuthi hills will be a good mountain trekking trip. From the top of Ambukuthi hills you can view the borders of three states of Kerala, Tamilnadu and Karnataka respectively. The word “Edakkal” refers to a situation of keeping one rock between two rocks in Malayalam, the language of Kerala got its name from the look of this cave as this cave was formed as a rock fall from above and landed on two rocks as the belief of local people. Edakkal caves reflect the strange position of one large stone jutting out of two rocks and in a way getting their support in a manner that it works as a natural shelter and as a place for the artistic expression of the local inhabitants.
The local people believe that Edakkal caves was the shelter for Rama and his brothers in the Hindu devotional book Ramayana when he was doing his fourteen years forest life term.
Soochipara Waterfalls
Soochipara Waterfalls is a waterfall in Wayanad and is a panoramic location for the tourists. The water flows from 50 meters above a flat cliff. The word Soochipaara means “needle rock”. Soochipara Waterfalls is located 22 kms from Hotel Green Gates. Hotel Green Gates provides a pleasant stay and the restaurant provides tasty food to the tourists. You can reach the waterfalls after a 2-km walk into the dense equatorial forest of Wayanad. Now the tourism department in Kerala has done pavement work to the path towards the waterfalls for the easy access to tourists but this action has resulted for the lose of some natural beauty of the place. The month of November to March is ideal for the trip to Wayanad. You can have a bath under the waterfall though it is risky some times.
Kuruva Dweep
Kuruva Dweep (Kuruva Islands) is another fabulous attraction in Wayanad district. Kuruva islands are a group of 900 islands in 950 acres. The tributary of the river Kabani flowing in from Karnataka makes these islands. Each island comprises of 1-2 acres. Its serene silence and vastness of the evergreen forest leaves you astonishing in your life. This island is isolated but an array of uncommon species of birds, herbs and orchids are the diversities of Kuruva Island. Kuruva Island is located 17 kms to the east of Mananthavady. Kuruva islands are suitable for the river trekking.
Pukoode Lake
Another tourist attraction in Wayanad is Pukoode Lake which 3 kilometers from Vythiri. Pukoode Lake is a natural fresh water lake surrounded by evergreen forests and hills and provides boating facility for the tourists at minimal charges and a shopping centre for the traditional handicrafts and spices and a children’s park. A fresh water aquarium with large variety of fish is an added attraction.
Tomb of Pazhassi Raja
The memorial tomb of “The Lion of Kerala” Veera Pazhassi Raja, who organised the guerilla warfare against the British East India Company, is situated at Mananthavady, Wayanad.
Museum
A Museum is located in the town of Ambalavayal, 27 kms from Kalpetta is home to an interesting collection of artifacts that shed light on the history, culture and heritage of Wayanad region. This is one of the best-maintained museums of Kerala's Malabar region. The museum has a fine collection of 14th - 16th century sculptures, tribal artifacts, which include jewels, hunting and fishing weapons, farming implements etc.

Chain Tree
This is a large tree bound by a chain near Lakkidi in Wayanad. It is believed that a priest chained the soul of a Adivasi youth, who guided a British Engineer through mountain terrain into Wayanad. The British Engineer killed Adivasi to take the credit of discovery of the way. There were many accidents in the area and the spirit was chained to tree so that the spirit can no more cause accidents and drivers offer prayers to this tree.
