Mangrove forests are known for its variety of flora and fauna. It helps to keep and protect the habitat as well as provide nutrients to fish and animals
Mangroves help the survival of several endangered species. The mangrove resources are fragile and this biodiversity should be preserved well to protect our nature and environment. It plays an important role in the life cycle of the nature and provides a habitat for wide range of plants and animals. But the rapid coastal developments cause damages to mangrove forests and the requirement to build a programme to regenerate the mangrove plantation is essential.
The erosion caused by waves and ocean currents are protected by mangrove forests and they provide nourishment to fish, crab and various other animals living in mangrove forests. In ancient times human beings were using the mangrove timber which is tough and termite resistant for building shelters and damaged timbers for fuel.

Recently over 800,000 mangroves are planted in Saadiyat and Jubail islands in Abu Dhabi to comprehend the removal of some mangroves from the Saadiyat island for the development of island as tourist and cultural destination by the Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi stands in second position after Iran in the GCC area for the mangrove forests area coverage. This conservation programme by Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) is good and requires some recognition.

Rhizophora mucronata is a species of mangrove which was extinct 100 years ago. Recently EAD have succeeded in reintroducing it at Ras Ghanada Island. Chettuwa backwaters have three islands with mangrove forests surrounding the island border. We should encourage the steps taken for preservation of mangrove forests.
